Romantic comedies are tough to digest, and there’s something fundamentally wrong with anyone who actually enjoys watching them. Seriously… how moronic do you have to be to sit through the same movie formula time after time. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Boy and girl break up. Boy and girl get back together. It’s four sentences that describe every romantic comedy ever made. While not all of them are uniformly terrible, it takes some creative work to make them slightly tolerable. While Salmon Fishing in the Yemen doesn’t necessarily break the mold, it does provide plenty of out of the box moments. It’s still predictable, but at least it has some charm and wit about it.
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen watch online works like this. Dr. Jones is a robotic fish and wildlife department employee. Ms. Chetwode-Talbot is a skinny little woman who works for a wealthy sheikh from Yemen. When the sheikh gets the crazy idea to import salmon into Yemen for sport fishing, their worlds collide amid bumbling fish acts, plenty of arguing, and some sheikh mysticism. Will they fall for each other? You betcha.
Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a beautiful movie to watch free. Vision-wise, the imagery on this movie is a cut above your average romantic comedy. It’s almost as if Hallstrom believes he’s actually directing a movie and not some cookie-cutter piece of tripe meant to make housewives happy. While there are still some problems with the film, most notably the most hilarious fly-fishing cast that I’ve ever watched in my life, overall, the film provides plenty of laughs and feels rather genuine. It could do without some clichés, such as the “lover returning from the dead” schtick, but at its heart it’s still a romantic comedy bound to the rules and regulations of the genre.
The cast is solid through and through. Ewan McGregor is relatable enough as a sort of every man with a Scottish accent. Emily Blunt keeps the trousers tight as Ms. Chatwode-Talbot. Still, the 12 year age difference between the two is enough to make me want to throw up. Blunt does a fine job, McGregor was pretending to be a junkie who saw dead babies on the ceiling. Kristin Scott Thomas is a little over-bearing as Bridget Maxwell, a government official whose job is to keep public opinion about the war in Afghanistan at tolerable levels. Amr Waked is fascinating as Sheikh, a mystical sheikh who doesn’t deserve an actual name apparently. Waked keeps Salmon Fishing in the Yemen from getting bogged down in the inevitable brewing of hormonal processes on display here.
There are a fare amount of situational laughs when you watch Salmon Fishing in the Yemen free online as well as quite a few banterous moments of levity. Hallstrom’s film delivers at just the right moments to keep you from groaning at all of the raw emotionality. In the end, this is what keeps this film from being boring like most romantic comedies, and it makes the it worth watching.
If your significant other is going to make you watch a romantic comedy, it might as well be Salmon Fishing in the Yemen… and that’s about as great an endorsement of a romantic comedy as you’re likely to get from me. Also, you do know Prometheus is coming out later this year, right? I say, take your partner to this movie online, because it’s tolerable, and then keep this stuff in your back pocket until it’s time to watch something badass… like Prometheus.
Solid romance. Solid comedy. Watch it if you need to get laid. There I said it, that’s all these things are good for.
